She comes from a distinguished pottery family, inspired by her grandmother, Maria Sanchez Colaque, and related to the legendary potter Maria Martinez. Active since 1982, Vangie is celebrated for her polished redware and black-on-white sgraffito pottery, including seed pots, jars, wedding vases, melon bowls, canteens, pitchers, and miniatures. Her intricate freehand sgraffito designs often feature hummingbirds, eagles, water serpents (avanyu), clouds, feathers, and geometric patterns, crafted with natural clay and paints from Jemez Pueblo’s sacred grounds. Vangie’s signature includes “Vangie Tafoya, Jemez” followed by an eagle feather, representing her clan origin. She has passed her craft to her children, Brenda Tafoya, Helen Tafoya Henderson, and Tyron Tafoya.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Antique American Indian Art","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":45878084894885,"sku":"22-0623","price":220.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0718\/6071\/5685\/files\/s725348264778838518_p14784_i1_w944.jpg?v=1757346637","url":"https:\/\/antiqueamericanindianart.com\/products\/22-0623-vangie-tafoya-jemez-pottery","provider":"Antique American Indian Art","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
