Born around 1970, he learned carving from his uncles, Pernell (d. 2008) and Maxx Laate, part of the prominent Laate family of carvers. His cousin, Esteban Najera, also trained under the same uncles. Initially interested in painting and pottery, Derrick shifted to stone carving, rarely using antler, unlike his family. His first fetish, a fish carved from green snail shell, marked the beginning of his journey, where he learned to let the raw material's shape guide his designs.

Kaamasee is celebrated for his detailed and imaginative depictions of animals, birds, and cultural figures, often incorporating bases carved from the same stone to allow for intricate, in-the-round legs
