He was born at Zuni Pueblo to a Zuni mother (Irene Vicenti) and Hopi-Tewa father (Emerson Namingha, Jr.). He is the grandson of Rachel Namingha Nampeyo, great-grandson of Annie Healing, and great-great-grandson of the renowned potter Nampeyo of Hano. He learned traditional Hopi pottery techniques from his aunt, master potter Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo, while also drawing on a BFA in Design from Brigham Young University (1992). He incorporates native clays, traditional outdoor (often sheep-dung) firing for many pieces, and sometimes acrylics or layered contemporary approaches.
