She began learning pottery around age 11 from her mother, Ida Yepa, and aunt Alvina Yepa. Her grandmother Reyes Toya (sometimes referenced as great-grandmother in lineages) was also a potter, continuing a strong family tradition of acclaimed Jemez artists.
