In the 1910s–1920s, she and her husband Julian revived and innovated ancient Pueblo black-on-black techniques after being inspired by excavated sherds from the Pajarito Plateau. Maria handled coiling and polishing; Julian often added matte designs on the polished surface.By the mid-1950s, she created many plain polished blackware pieces (no painted decoration), signing them with \"Maria Poveka.\" These emphasize perfect symmetry, thin walls, and a mirror-like or metallic polish achieved through laborious stone polishing and controlled firing. The gunmetal variant is especially valued for its subtle silvery tones that can shift with light.","brand":"Antique American Indian Art","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47660916211877,"sku":"p045","price":3530.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0718\/6071\/5685\/files\/P045p_7aa2cbcf-74f0-4bdc-93b8-e31ed9a08adc.jpg?v=1776709085","url":"https:\/\/antiqueamericanindianart.com\/products\/san-ildefonso-gunmenta-polished-plain-blackware-bowl-by-maria-martinez","provider":"Antique American Indian Art","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
