She learned pottery from her grandmother as a young child. Maria Martinez’s sister gave her the name “Blue Corn” during a traditional San Ildefonso naming ceremony. She married Santiago “Sandy” Calabaza; they raised ten children. He assisted with carving, painting, and design until his death in 1972, after which their son Joseph helped. During World War II she worked as a housecleaner in Los Alamos for physicist J.
