Of classic form and in excellent condition, this fine antique Polychome Bottleneck basket is a very fine and rare example of small stitched Kawaiisu Indian basketry of the Tehachipi Valley of Southern Central California . Kawaiisu basketry is rarely seen compared to the larger number of surviving Yokuts baskets. Woven of willow, yucca root, and devil's claw, tightly and evenly coiled on a bundle foundation; willow has aged to a pleasing amber tan color, typical of many baskets of this era.
