Early Tlingit gauntlet gloves is a style of traditional Native American gloves associated with the Tlingit people, indigenous to the Pacific Northwest Coast (primarily southeastern Alaska and parts of British Columbia and Yukon). These are typically leather (hide) gauntlets—long-cuffed gloves extending well up the forearm—with elaborate beadwork decoration.
Gauntlet gloves in general originated from European military and equestrian gear (dating back centuries for protection, like against bowstrings or in combat), and were adopted and adapted by various Native American groups after contact with Europeans and Americans in the 19th century. Among Plains, Plateau, and some Northern tribes, they became popular for riding, ceremonies, and trade, often heavily beaded with floral or geometric motifs using trade beads.
