Hand Coiled Clay Tall Vase with Painted Dark Brown and Orange Colors in a Geometric Design with Frog Woman Hallmark

In Very Good Condition with Minor Wear on Bottom

Joy Navasie (1919–2012), also known as the Second Frog Woman or Yellow Flower, was a highly regarded Hopi-Tewa potter from the Hopi Pueblo. She was the daughter of Paqua Naha (the original Frog Woman), from whom she learned traditional pottery-making techniques starting around age 17.

She specialized in whiteware (white-slipped) pottery using kaolin clay slip, with polychrome designs in black (often beeweed) and red. Common motifs include rainbirds, parrots, feathers, clouds, rain patterns, geometric elements, Hopi birds, and sometimes Kachina figures.

Frog hallmark (pictorial mark). Her frogs typically have webbed feet, distinguishing them from her mother’s (which had straight toes). She began using this around 1939. Some pieces may include additional elements like tadpoles.

Traditional hand-coiled, polished, painted, and fired (often in sheep dung). She worked actively until retiring in 1995.
