Hopi overlay is a distinct Native American silversmithing technique developed in the late 1930s/1940s, featuring two sterling silver layers. The top layer has a hand-cut, intricate design, which is soldered onto a bottom layer that is oxidized (blackened) and textured to create high contrast, resulting in a matte background with a polished foreground.
Award winning Hopi Pueblo artist McBride Lomayestewa is known for his modern Silver Overlay Jewelry creations. McBride Lomayestewa (1932-2002) was a consistent award winner at the Museum of Northern Arizona’s annual Hopi Show and the Santa Fe Indian Market. He was featured in many publications, including Native Peoples, Winter 1994:47.
