Alice & Ruben Martinez are a mother–son pottery team from San Ildefonso Pueblo (Tewa) known for producing high‑quality black‑on‑black and Tunyo‑style polychrome pottery, continuing the Martinez family lineage that traces back to Maria Martinez.

  • Alice’s parents were Richard and Lucy Martinez, both San Ildefonso potters.

  • Richard Martinez was the adopted son of Maria Martinez, the most influential Pueblo potter of the 20th century.

  • This places Alice and Ruben within the direct extended family tradition of Maria & Julian Martinez, whose innovations (matte‑on‑polished blackware, signature conventions, firing techniques) shaped modern San Ildefonso pottery.
