Ty Duwyenie (full name Tyrone Duwyenie) is a recognized Hopi Pueblo / Hualapai artist known for carving traditional katsina dolls since around 1978. He is also noted as a performer, singer, and musician. While most documented examples of his work are Hopi-style katsinas (such as Ogre, Sun God, White Buffalo Dancer, or Corn Dancer), Navajo artists frequently produce similar Hummingbird Kachina dolls inspired by shared Southwestern Native traditions, often sold as "Navajo-made" pieces.
The Hummingbird Kachina symbolizes joy, speed, beauty, love, and prayers for moisture/rain. It impersonates the bird's quick, bobbing movements and calls during winter/spring dances, acting as an entertaining figure in ceremonies.
