Navajo Kachina dolls (often spelled "Katsina" in Hopi tradition but adapted by Navajo artists) are handcrafted wooden figures representing spirits or natural elements, inspired by Hopi traditions but created as artistic and commercial pieces rather than sacred objects.  Unlike Hopi Katsinam, which are carved from a single piece of cottonwood root for ceremonial education, Navajo versions are typically assembled from machine-worked parts (using abundant woods like pine), hand-painted, and adorned with feathers, beads, leather, and fur for decorative appeal. They emerged in the mid-20th century as a craft for economic purposes, reflecting Navajo artistic flair with vibrant colors and accessories.
