Tootsie Dick Sam (also known as Tootsie Sam Dick or similar variations) was a highly skilled Washoe (Washo) basket weaver born around 1885 and active until her death in 1929. She is recognized as one of the finest weavers of her generation in the Great Basin region (border of present-day California and Nevada). Her work is prized in Native American art collections, especially for finely woven degikup (tightly coiled, bowl-shaped baskets) and other coiled forms. These are typically made with willow, redbud, and bracken fern root, featuring intricate polychrome designs (often black, red, and natural tones) with geometric or abstract motifs.
