Hand Carved from Walrus Ivory and Whale Baleen Spirit Mask and Adorned with Feathers
In Very Good Condition
Recently obtained from a private collection located in Seattle, WA
Nicolai M. Nicolai (from the Lower Kuskokwim or Lower Yukon/Kuskokwim region of Alaska), crafted it using traditional materials: walrus ivory for the main structure and whale baleen (the flexible, filter-like plates from bowhead whales) incorporated into the design, for inlays, eyes, or contrasting elements to evoke a spiritual or transformative face/mask form.
These small spirit masks draw from Inuit/Yup'ik traditions, where masks often represent animal spirits, ancestors, or shamanic visions—used historically in dances, ceremonies, or as protective amulets. Modern versions like this are collectible art pieces, blending cultural heritage with contemporary handicraft.
