A Plains tack knife (often called a "tacked knife" or "Plains tacked knife sheath" in full context) refers to a style of knife and its sheath associated with Native American tribes of the Great Plains (such as Northern Plains groups like the Cree, Sioux, or others).
These are typically practical butcher-style or skinning knives (frequently trade knives like Green River Works blades from the 19th century) paired with a leather sheath decorated with brass tacks (also called brass furniture tacks or studs). The tacks were hammered into the leather in decorative patterns—rows, geometric designs, crosses, or borders—creating a distinctive, shiny, and durable aesthetic.
