Hopi Kachina dolls (known as tithu or katsintithu in Hopi) are carved representations of katsinam—supernatural beings that embody spirits of nature, ancestors, and moral guides. They are not toys but educational tools, traditionally given to young girls to teach about Hopi cosmology, ceremonies, and values. Ogre Kachinas fall into the "disciplinary" category, appearing in winter ceremonies like the Bean Dance (Powamuya) to enforce good behavior among children. They accompany the Ogre Woman (Soyok Wuhti), threatening to devour or punish naughty kids, but relatives often "ransom" the children with food offerings, turning fear into a communal lesson.
