Turtle shaped bowls or trinket dishes are a popular export from Bali, Indonesia, where skilled woodcarvers create them from hardwoods like teak (jati), suar (rain tree), or similar dense tropical woods. The reddish-brown tone, polished finish, detailed shell patterning on the top (with grid-like segments, head, legs, and tail etched in), and the shallow interior bowl are classic features.
