The Makto Katsina specifically celebrates the hunt. It derives from an old mask documented at First Mesa (one of the Hopi mesas in northeastern Arizona) and described by anthropologist J. Walter Fewkes in 1903. The defining feature is the curved rabbit stick (a throwing tool used by the Hopi to hunt rabbits and small game), often depicted on the mask or held by the figure. This katsina embodies hunting success and is part of a broader group of hunter katsinam.
