Route 66 style kachinas (and their pin versions) emerged around the 1940s–1960s as affordable souvenirs for travelers on the iconic highway passing through the Southwest (including near Hopi lands in Arizona). They were sold at trading posts, roadside stands, and tourist stops. Unlike traditional ceremonial Hopi katsina dolls (which represent spiritual beings and are gifted to children during ceremonies), these are simplified, tourist-oriented versions—often smaller, with bold, colorful painted designs, quirky proportions, basic carving details, and sometimes feathers or string accents. They blend authentic Hopi craftsmanship with commercial appeal.
