Chaveyo (also spelled Tsaveyo or Chaveyo Ogre, known as the Black Ogre or Giant Ogre katsina) is one of the most fearsome figures in Hopi tradition. He belongs to the ogre family of katsinas (along with related beings like the Nataskas or Soyokos). Chaveyo and his counterpart Hahai-i-Wuhti (Ogre Woman) are considered parents of the dreaded ogre beings. His role is disciplinary: he appears during ceremonies like the Powamu (Bean Dance) to intimidate or "discipline" children or adults who have been lazy, disobedient, or failed community obligations—symbolically threatening to devour them if they don't behave or contribute. Despite his terrifying appearance, he serves as a teacher enforcing social and moral rules in Hopi culture.
