Hand Carved from Cottonwood Root Holding a Rattle and a Stick
In Very Good Condition
Darrell Youvella is a respected Hopi artist from First Mesa, Arizona, who has been carving katsina dolls since the 1980s. He comes from a family of artists, including his father Tino Youvella (a noted carver) and relatives like Preston Youvella. Darrell's work includes various traditional and detailed katsinas, such as Cactus Kachina, Horse Kachina, and Snake Guard Kachina, often carved from cottonwood root with natural pigments and signed on the base.
The Hopi Pueblo Kokopelli Flute Player Kachina Doll by Darrell Youvella is a hand-carved Hopi katsina (kachina) doll representing the iconic Kokopelli figure, a humpbacked flute player associated with fertility, agriculture, music, seduction, and good fortune in Pueblo traditions (including Hopi interpretations). Kokopelli is often depicted as a bent-over, joyful being playing a flute, symbolizing abundance, rain-bringing mist, and baby-making powers.
Due to the fragile nature of kachina dolls, we do not guarantee they will not break during shipping. We do our best to pack them well, but due to their fragile nature and even with the best packing, small pieces can break. If you are purchasing kachina dolls, please keep this in mind.
