L. Pooley is a member of the Pooley family, a well-known Hopi artisan family from areas like Third Mesa (e.g., Hotevilla). Family members such as L. Pooley, G. Pooley (possibly Grace or George), and others have produced many of these Route 66-style miniatures and dolls since the late 20th century (e.g., 1960s–1990s+). They are signed by the artist, with examples including Eagles, Owls, Snake Guards, and more.

"Route 66 style" describes a specific tourist-oriented carving tradition from the mid-20th century onward. These are typically smaller, stylized, simply painted wooden dolls (often from cottonwood root) sold along Route 66 in Arizona near Hopi lands. They feature bold colors, minimal detail compared to ceremonial pieces, and are made for the souvenir/collector market rather than sacred use.
