The Crow Mother is one of the most revered Katsinam in Hopi culture. She is considered a "mother" or leader figure among the Katsinam, often appearing during ceremonies like the Powamuya (Bean Dance) to oversee the whipping/initiation of children into the Katsina society, provide guidance, protection, and discipline (e.g., using yucca whips to correct misbehavior). She symbolizes leadership, compassion, dignity, and nurturing—sometimes depicted carrying yucca branches (for whipping) or a bowl/basket of corn (in her "Crow Bride" guise). Her mask is distinctive: typically a turquoise or blue helmet-like head with black crow wings attached, a black triangular design on the front, feathers, and fur ruff around the neck.
