The Owl Kachina (Mongwa or Mongwu in Hopi/Navajo) represents intelligence, wisdom, keen sight, and a successful hunt. It benefits agriculture by symbolizing the owl's role in controlling rodents that damage crops. In ceremonies, the Owl is a disciplinarian—often whipping misbehaving clown dancers with yucca blades to enforce proper behavior.
The Owl appears in Mixed Dances and Soyohim ceremonies, sometimes as a warrior leader who brings "whippers" to summer events. The "dancer" aspect shows the figure in a dynamic pose, mimicking the rhythmic steps set to traditional music (drums, rattles, and songs invoking rain and fertility).
