A Superb One Piece Hand Carved and Painted from Cottonwood Root with Great Carved Detail
In Very Good Condition
Gerald E. Dukepoo (often signed as G. Dukepoo or Gerald Dukepoo) was a respected Hopi artist known for hand-carving traditional katsina dolls from cottonwood root, a common material for authentic Hopi pieces. He created various katsinas in the late 20th century and into the 2000s, including examples like Mudhead (Koyemsi), clowns, and others seen in auctions, galleries, and collections.
The Pachavu Hú' Kachina (also known as the "Whipper Kachina" or Hu Kachina) is a traditional Hopi katsina (spirit being) associated with discipline and initiation ceremonies. In Hopi culture, this figure appears during Pachavu (or Powamuya), a winter ceremony involving the Bean Dance and rites of passage for children. The Whipper Kachina acts as an enforcer or guardian, using whips (often yucca leaves) to lightly "discipline" or symbolically correct misbehaving children, while also protecting the community and participants in ceremonies. It is one of the guardian or ogre-like katsinas that help maintain order and teach lessons.
Due to the fragile nature of kachina dolls, we do not guarantee they will not break during shipping. We do our best to pack them well, but due to their fragile nature and even with the best packing, small pieces can break. If you are purchasing kachina dolls, please keep this in mind.
