Antique Plateau beaded bags are beautiful examples of Native American craftsmanship from the Columbia River Plateau region (encompassing parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and associated tribes like the Yakama, Nez Perce, and others).
These bags emerged in the 19th century after European traders introduced colorful glass beads to the area. Initially, they featured partial beading on trade cloth backgrounds (often red), but by the 1880s, fully beaded designs using contour beading (stitching outward from a center point in circular or elliptical patterns) became common. This technique gave them a vibrant, shimmering quality and drew inspiration from local basketry traditions.
