Crow Indian beaded pouches are exquisite examples of traditional Native American craftsmanship from the Crow (Apsáalooke) people, a Plains tribe historically located in what is now Montana and surrounding areas.
These pouches, often made from brain-tanned hide (like deer or buffalo), leather, or sometimes incorporating trade cloth, feature intricate glass beadwork applied using techniques like lazy stitch. Crow beadwork stands out for its bold geometric designs, vibrant colors (frequently including blues, reds, whites, yellows, and greens), and motifs such as arrows, bars, diamonds, hourglass shapes, or abstract floral elements. They were typically functional items—used as strike-a-lite bags (for carrying fire-starting tools like flint and tinder), tobacco pouches, small personal bags, or even "mirror bags" and pipe bags in related forms.
