Plains Indian beaded leather purse bags (often called pouches, herb bags, medicine bags, or possible bags) are traditional Native American items from tribes of the Plains region, such as the Sioux (Dakota/Lakota), Cheyenne, Blackfoot, and others.
These bags are typically handmade from tanned leather (like buckskin or deerskin), decorated with intricate glass beadwork using techniques like spot-stitching or lazy stitch for geometric or floral patterns. Beads were acquired through trade with Europeans starting in the mid-19th century, replacing earlier quillwork or native materials. Designs often feature vibrant colors, with motifs including flowers (influenced by Woodland tribes), stars, crosses, or abstract geometrics. Many include fringe, tassels, shells, or metal cones for decoration, and they often have drawstrings or straps for carrying.
