Original story included likely transcribed from the baskets weaver.

"Kwati heard about the big monster in the ea that use to swallow up canoes and all. Kwati said, "I'm going to see for myself what the've been talking about." Kwati got busy and started making a little canoe - day after day - and one day the little canoe got finished and he said, "I must have a name for it. The canoe's name is going to be Hu-pid-wash (Small one). "Well, I'm not so ready yet. I hav ethe sharpen something to kill the monster." So he goes down the beach and gathers some mussel shell. He sharpened and sharpened them and he said, "Well, it must be very marm in the monster's stomach." So he goes out and makes a big fire and puts his pot on the fire and when its hot he jomps in and when he jumps out, he has no hair. And he says, "I'm ready now." He shoves out his little coanoe. Then he paddles out - paddling and paddling past Tatoosh Island (that's where he thought he heard the monster was). When he got there he yelled, "COME OUT WHAT LIVES HERE!" - hollard several times. And the monster came up and swallowed Kwati canoe and all. Well, when he was down in the whale's stomach he started cutting away on the whale's stomach. Three days and three nights he was in the whale's stomach. Then the whale got sick and drifted ashore and he came o of the whale's mouth and he yelled to his people, "Come out! Come out! There's a whale on the shore! So all the people came down and cut up the whale and took big chunks home."
