Vern point is a master Seaman and Hull technician at Maritime Forces Pacific. He is a member of the Chehalis first Nations and a master Carver. He was seconded to the restoration project of the Mungo Martin totem pole in Victoria British Columbia in the spring of 2001 due to his skills and the navies commitment to the local community. The Mungo Martin totem was dedicated on July 2, 1956 in the Beacon Hill Park of Victoria BC. At 38.8 m tall it is the largest freestanding totem pole in the world. Due to weather elements in the natural decay of the cedar poor it was taken down in November 2000; master Seaman Point was working on the beak. The 8 foot cedar beak replaces the original one and will be re-inserted into the pole and painted in the original color scheme.
