Late 20th Century
13" H
Hand Carved from Cottonwood Root with Great Carved Detail
In Very Good Condition
L. Valentine (Leroy Valentine or Larry Valentine, a Hopi carver active in the late 20th century) created at least one notable example of this doll. It's a late 20th-century piece carved from cottonwood root, standing about 13 inches tall. It has appeared in sales listings (e.g., antique dealers and eBay archives) described as "A Holi" or "Aholi," signed by the artist, and valued in the $500–$600 range in past resale contexts. Valentine also carved other katsinam, such as Quail, Eagle, Hano Mana (Tewa Girl), and Crow Bride, showing his range in detailed traditional and action-style Hopi carvings.
AHOLI is a high priest who visits the Hopi people with Eototo on Third Mesa during the Powamuya Ceremony. With brightly colored robes and a tall blue helmet, Aholi represents the dazzling colors of the summer season, when the flowers are in full bloom and a plentiful harvest is growing. Carrying a staff or feathers and wearing colors of red, blue, yellow and white, Aholi assists Eototo in bringing rain to the villages.
