Late 20th Century
11" H
Hand Carved from Cottonwood Root and Adorned with Fur, Hair, Yarn, Felt and Feathers from the 2nd Mesa Wall Plaque Hanging
In Very Good Condition
Max Curley, a respected Hopi carver from Second Mesa (specifically associated with villages like Musungnovi/Mishongnovi), has created pieces featuring this Katsina, including wall plaques or hanging styles.
The Broadface is a guard or "whipper" Katsina (sometimes called Broadface Whipper). In Hopi ceremonies, particularly during dances and initiations, these figures act as enforcers of order and discipline. They often carry yucca whips to gently (or not so gently) correct or guide clowns and participants who misbehave, helping maintain ritual propriety. They appear as protectors and are considered among the more "angry" or stern Katsinam.
Due to the fragile nature of kachina dolls, we do not guarantee they will not break during shipping. We do our best to pack them well, but due to their fragile nature and even with the best packing, small pieces can break. If you are purchasing kachina dolls, please keep this in mind.
