The Hopi bullroarer—called tovokìnpi in Hopi—is a traditional ritual instrument used primarily in weather‑calling ceremonies, especially those connected to thunder, rain, and the monsoon season. It’s one of the most culturally significant sound‑tools in Hopi ceremonial life.

Two major contexts are documented:

  • Snake–Antelope Ceremony (Second Mesa villages) A Kalehtaka (warrior) of the Bow Priesthood twirls the bullroarer at key moments, trailing the Antelope priests. The sound announces the presence of the ceremonial party to water deities such as Balolookongwuu (water serpent beings) and the Cloud People.

  • Flute Ceremony Photographs show its use in the Flute Dance, where it accompanies ritual movement and prayer for rain.
