Larson Chapella is a recognized Hopi carver known for creating authentic katsina dolls, including various figures like clowns (e.g., Koshari or Rio Grande Clown), Whipper Kachina, Lizard Girl, and others. His works date primarily to the late 20th century and early 21st century, often in traditional or vintage styles using cottonwood root, with detailed painting, feathers, and accessories.
The Lolokong (Racer Snake) katsina represents the speedy desert racer snake. It serves as a guardian or "runner" kachina—not a dancer but a patroller—who appears during ceremonies like the Powamu (Bean Dance) and other day dances. Its role includes watching over proceedings, guarding dancers, maintaining order, and disciplining if needed. It symbolizes agility, speed, and protection.
Due to the fragile nature of kachina dolls, we do not guarantee they will not break during shipping. We do our best to pack them well, but due to their fragile nature and even with the best packing, small pieces can break. If you are purchasing kachina dolls, please keep this in mind.
