Gloria Garcia, known artistically as "Golden Rod" (or Goldenrod), is a respected Santa Clara Pueblo (K'haP'o Owingeh) potter born in 1942. She specializes in traditional hand-coiled miniature and small seed jars (also called seed pots), primarily in redware and blackware, featuring intricate sgraffito (freehand etched or incised) designs.
She comes from a talented artistic family. Her mother was Petra Gutierrez (of Pojoaque Pueblo ancestry), and her sisters include potters like Lois Gutierrez, Minnie Vigil, and Thelma Talachy. She is also connected through marriage to other Garcia potters.
Garcia began making pottery around 1974. She gathers and prepares her own clay and materials in the traditional way, hand-coils her vessels, sands and polishes them to a high gloss, then etches detailed designs without stencils. She finishes pieces with traditional outdoor firing.
Common motifs include animals (turtles, bears, deer, horses, eagles, parrots, butterflies), Avanyu (water serpent), sun faces, bear paws, corn maidens, rain clouds, and geometric patterns. Her work is known for fine detail and high polish.
