Dorothy “Dot” Ami is a respected Hopi-Tewa potter from the village of Polacca on First Mesa, Arizona. She was born in December 1967 into the Hopi-Tewa Tobacco Clan.
She is known for high-quality, traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery, often featuring precise shapes, fine-line or geometric designs, polychrome (multi-color) work, fire clouds, and elements like butterflies, feathers, lightning motifs, and abstract symbols. She uses traditional methods: coiling with naturally gathered and tempered clays (including rich red clays), vegetal and mineral slips/pigments, and yucca or even her own hair for fine brushes. Her pieces are noted for thin walls, clean execution, beautiful blushes from firing, and overall precision.
