Cavan Gonzales is a potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo, known for his contributions to the polychrome pottery revival. As the great-great-grandson of the legendary Maria Martinez, he carries forward the San Ildefonso tradition of hand-coiled pottery, specializing in black-on-black, red, and polychrome styles. Born in 1970, Gonzales learned from his mother, Barbara Gonzales, and draws on techniques pioneered by Maria and Julian Martinez, such as matte designs on polished surfaces. His work often features geometric and checkerboard patterns.
