From a Private Colorado Collection
Leo Lacapa is a respected Hopi kachina doll carver from First Mesa, above Polacca, Arizona, and a member of the Water/Corn Clan. Born around the 1960s, he began carving at age 15 under the guidance of his uncle, using traditional methods like a pocketknife and sandpaper. With over 30 years of experience, Lacapa is known for his accurate representations and excellent proportions, reflecting his active participation in First Mesa kachina ceremonies. His work, blending traditional and modern styles, is featured in galleries from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and has been displayed at the Smithsonian and Heard Museum, though he rarely competes in shows. Notable carvings include Aholi, Eototo’s Lieutenant, Snow Nuvak, and Snake Dancer kachinas, crafted from cottonwood root and valued for quality at reasonable prices. Lacapa is also the brother-in-law of carver Tino Youvella, and his work is sought by collectors for its cultural authenticity and craftsmanship.
