Kathy Wan Povi Sanchez, whose Tewa name "Wan Povi" translates to “Pine Flower,” is a Tewa Elder from San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. A fourth-generation traditional blackware potter, she learned the craft from her mother, Anita Martinez, and her renowned great-grandparents, Maria and Julian Martinez, who helped revive and popularize San Ildefonso blackware pottery. Kathy is also a fluent Tewa speaker, a skill passed down by her grandparents, which connects her deeply to her cultural roots.
