Candelaria Suazo is a renowned potter from Santa Clara Pueblo, born in the late 1950s. She learned traditional pottery-making techniques from her mother, Santanita Suazo, and aunts Dolores Curran and Geri Naranjo. Since 1987, Suazo has specialized in sgraffito two-tone pottery, featuring polished blackware with sienna spots and intricate designs such as rabbits, hummingbirds, feathers, and the avanyu (water serpent). Her work often includes geometric patterns and is known for its detailed craftsmanship, reflecting Santa Clara’s deep-carved blackware tradition pioneered by Margaret Tafoya and Sarafina Gutierrez Tafoya. Suazo’s pottery is typically hand-coiled, carved, or etched, with designs inspired by nature and pueblo traditions.
