White Swann (Dolly Joe Navasie, b. 1964) is a respected Hopi potter known for her traditional hand-coiled pottery, including miniature and small seed jars.
Dolly Joe Navasie, also known as White Swann (or White Swan). She belongs to the Water Clan and is from the Antelope Mesa area near Keams Canyon on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Daughter of Eunice “Fawn” Navasie (a well-known potter). Sister to Dawn Navasie and Fawn Navasie. She learned pottery young (starting around age 6) by watching and helping her mother and grandmother. She uses traditional methods: hand-dug and processed clay, hand-coiling, natural pigments, yucca brushes, and outdoor firing with sheep dung. Her work often features polished surfaces, polychrome (multiple colors) designs with geometric patterns, bird elements (like eagletails), katsina motifs, and Sikyatki Revival influences common in Hopi pottery. She signs pieces “White Swann” with a small swan hallmark. She has won numerous awards at shows like the Heard Museum Guild Indian Art Fair, Santa Fe Indian Market, and Museum of Northern Arizona Hopi Show.
