Alonzo Yantahe is a recognized Zuni fetish carver who creates detailed animal carvings, including turtles, often using materials like wood, antler, or stone, with turquoise inlays for eyes to symbolize protection and spiritual significance. Zuni fetishes, unlike Navajo ones, are deeply tied to ceremonial practices and represent animals or spirits believed to hold protective or healing powers. A turtle fetish, symbolizing Mother Earth, longevity, and tenacity, is a common Zuni carving, and Yantahe’s work often features such traditional elements.
