Quandelacy Family (likely Chad)

The Quandelacy family is a renowned lineage of Zuni Pueblo artists from New Mexico, specializing in traditional Zuni fetish carvings. These small, intricately carved figures are spiritual objects believed to embody guardian spirits or deities, often used for protection, healing, and fertility. The family has produced multiple generations of carvers, including Sandra Quandelacy, Faye Quandelacy (deceased 2022), Stuart Quandelacy (deceased), Vickie Quandelacy, and others like Kateri Sanchez (née Quandelacy). They are particularly celebrated for their detailed maiden figures, which draw from Zuni mythology.

In Zuni tradition, Corn Maidens (also known as Kokopelli Maidens or simply "Maidens") represent fertility, abundance, and sustenance. They are inspired by ancient legends where the Corn Maiden sacrificed herself to save the Zuni people from starvation, symbolizing the life-giving power of corn—the staple crop of Pueblo agriculture. Corn is uniquely associated with femininity in Zuni lore because it "gives milk" when ripe kernels are squeezed, mirroring nurturing qualities. These figures often feature symbolic elements like corn kernels (for fertility), tablita headdresses (ceremonial tablet-shaped caps), olla jars (water vessels), or elaborate jewelry inlaid with materials such as turquoise, coral, jet, and shell. The maidens embody feminine energy and community welfare, with variations showing pregnant forms or children to emphasize reproduction.
