In Excellent Condition A Remarkable Jar
Maria Martinez (1887–1980), also known as Po've'ka ("Pond Lily"), was one of the most renowned Native American potters of the 20th century from San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. She is world-famous for reviving and perfecting the black-on-black pottery technique around 1918–1920, working closely with her husband Julian Martinez, who painted the intricate matte designs on the highly polished black surfaces. This style was inspired by ancient Pueblo pottery fragments and involved a special firing process where the oxygen was reduced (smothered with dung or other materials), turning the clay black instead of the traditional red.
