Hand Crafted from Hide Leather and Decorated with Glass Seed Beads in a Geometric Design
In Very Good Condition
Antique Northern Plains beaded knife cases (also called knife sheaths or sheaths) are beautiful examples of Native American craftsmanship from tribes like the Sioux (Lakota/Dakota), Cheyenne, Crow, Blackfoot, and others in the Northern Plains region (roughly modern-day Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and surrounding areas).
These items date primarily from the mid-to-late 19th century through the early 20th century (ca. 1870–1900s), during a period when trade goods like glass seed beads became widely available via European-American traders. Artisans used them to create intricate geometric designs—often featuring bold colors like blue, red, yellow, white, and green—on tanned hide (brain-tanned buckskin or rawhide), sometimes with fringe, tin cones (for tinkling sounds), or other decorations.
