An antique Plateau beaded bag is a traditional Native American handmade pouch or purse originating from the Plateau region of the Pacific Northwest (between the Cascade and Rocky Mountains). This includes tribes such as the Nez Perce, Yakama (Yakima), Flathead, and others who lived in areas now part of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.
These bags became prominent in the 19th and early 20th centuries after European traders introduced colorful glass seed beads (often called trade beads) around the early 1800s. Before beads, Native artisans in the region used materials like cornhusks for woven bags (sometimes called "cornhusk bags"), but beaded versions evolved into highly prized items with intricate designs.
