Antique Great Lakes beaded garters are beautiful examples of traditional Native American craftsmanship from the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes region (including tribes like the Ojibwe/Anishinaabe, Odawa, Potawatomi, and other Algonquian-speaking groups, often referred to as Woodland or Eastern Woodlands peoples).
These garters were typically worn by men (and sometimes women) just below the knee to secure leggings made of deerskin or cloth. They served both a practical purpose (holding up leggings during daily activities, hunting, or ceremonies) and a decorative one, showcasing intricate beadwork as a form of personal adornment and cultural expression.
