The Zuni Eagle Dancer is a sacred figure representing a spiritual messenger who carries prayers between humans and the creator. This concept is expressed through both live ceremonial performances and iconic forms of southwestern Native American artwork.

Among the Pueblo of Zuni (A:shiwi) and other Pueblo tribes, the eagle is highly revered for its supernatural power, incredible vision, and connection to higher consciousness. Because eagles fly higher than any other bird, they are trusted to transport human prayers to the heavens. During ceremonies, dancers use intricately choreographed movements to mimic the majestic soaring and swooping motions of the eagle.These dances serve as dynamic prayers, typically requesting divine intervention for weather control, rain, and successful harvests.
