Cecil Calnimptewa Jr. (born 1950) is a master Hopi-Tewa katsina (kachina) doll carver from Moenkopi village on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. He is widely regarded as one of the finest and most influential contemporary Hopi carvers.
Cecil is known for one-piece cottonwood root carvings that capture the spirit and action of katsinam. He often sings or chants while carving, believing it infuses positive energy. Favorites include Eagle katsinam. His work has earned numerous awards, including Best of Division, Best of Class, and First Place at Santa Fe Indian Market (1991). He is the only Hopi carver profiled in a dedicated monograph.
His carvings are in major museum collections and private holdings worldwide. He has been a teacher and innovator, influencing many other carvers. In later years, when unable to carve, he created detailed colored-pencil drawings of katsinam.
